Why Your Pod Tastes Burnt
The short answer. A pod tastes burnt when the coil gets hot and the wick next to it has not got enough liquid. The wick is the soft strip that carries liquid to the coil. Most of the time the pod is simply close to empty. Other causes are puffing too fast, using the stronger power mode, a cold or hot pod, and now and then a faulty pod. A flat battery can also make the taste thin, and many people call that burnt too. Stop for a few minutes, check the battery, and swap the pod if the taste stays.

Is the Pod Empty or Burnt?
A pod that is almost empty and a pod that is burnt can taste much the same. This small table helps you tell them apart.

Our Crystal Pro 10K kit page says that when the flavour starts to taste thin or slightly burnt, the liquid is finished and you need a new pod. Most vaping guides say the same thing (industry consensus). That page also says the puff figure is a best case, so a pod can run out sooner than you expect.
Do not judge by one puff. Take three or four slow ones before you decide.
If the taste is only weak and not harsh, charge the kit first. If it is harsh or smoky, the wick is dry, and more puffs will only make it worse. A finished pod needs a matching one, so check your model name against the prefilled pod packs before you order.
Boost Mode, Fast Puffs and Heat
The coil heats up every time you puff. Between puffs the wick soaks up more liquid. If you puff again too soon, the wick may not have filled up, and the coil heats a wick that is nearly dry. That is where a burnt taste starts. Makers and vaping guides describe it this way (industry consensus). One guide for tank vapes suggests leaving 15 to 30 seconds between puffs. Charge the kit before the light shows empty, so you never judge a pod while the battery is low.
Temperature plays a part as well. Liquid gets thicker when it is cold, so it moves more slowly to the coil (industry consensus). If a pod has spent the day in a cold bag, give it a short rest in a warm room before the first puff. That tip is our own reading. At the other end, heat is a problem too. Our Crystal Pro page says a warm car may thin the liquid and cause leaks, and it advises keeping the kit upright in a cool place.

What to Try Before Swapping
Work through these steps in order. Most burnt tastes are sorted by step three.
- Stop puffing and put the kit down for a few minutes.
- Look at the battery light or screen. If it is low, charge the kit fully.
- Make sure the pod sits fully in place, and keep the kit upright.
- On a two-flavour kit, twist to the other side and try one gentle puff.
- Take slow puffs with breaths in between. If your kit has a power choice, use the lower one.

One habit is worth dropping. Taking harder and longer puffs to bring the flavour back does not help, because it dries the wick even faster. If the flavour has gone, rest the kit or change the pod.
How long should a new pod rest before the first puff? The sources do not agree. The Hayati page says to leave a fresh pod for around a minute before the first draw. Guides for refillable coils say 5 to 10 minutes, and one says up to 30. Those guides are about coils that you fill yourself. For a sealed pod, follow the maker's own wording. A minute is the figure we have seen on our pages.
Now the things not to do. Do not open the pod. Do not add your own liquid. Do not try to clean the coil. Some websites say to soak a burnt coil in vinegar or alcohol, but that advice is for coils you can take out. A sealed pod is not made to be opened, so in our view it is better to replace it.
