How Many Nic Shots for 100ml? Simple Mixing Maths

How Many Nic Shots for 100ml, The Short Answer

You need 2 nic shots for a 100ml shortfill. Use two 10ml shots at 18mg and you get a 3mg liquid. That is the most a normal 100ml shortfill bottle can hold, because the bottle has room for 100ml of liquid and only 20ml of shots.

If you add just 1 shot, you get a lighter mix of about 1.6mg. If you add none, the liquid stays at 0mg, just as it came.

These sums use a 10ml shot at 18mg. This is the usual size and strength. Always check the label on your own shot before you mix. If our page for a shot does not say the size, ask us.

Shots Needed for Common Strengths

This table is for a 100ml shortfill in a 120ml bottle. Here the final amount of liquid is the 100ml plus the shots you add.

18mg shots added Final amount Final strength
0 100ml 0mg
1 110ml About 1.6mg
2 120ml 3mg

Two shots fill the bottle to the top. There is no room for a third.

Why 18mg Shots Cannot Reach 20mg

An 18mg shot can never make a liquid stronger than 18mg, even if the whole bottle was shots. So 20mg is out of reach with these shots. We explain this in full below.

The Sum Behind Every Nic Shot

You do not need to be good at maths. You only need one idea. A shot holds a fixed amount of nicotine, and the final bottle spreads it out.

Here is the sum, step by step:

  1. Take the size of the shot, which is 10ml.
  2. Multiply it by the strength on the label. A 10ml shot at 18mg holds 180mg of nicotine.
  3. Divide by the final amount of liquid in the bottle. 180mg shared across 100ml gives 1.8mg in every ml.

The same sum, turned around, tells you how many shots you need. Multiply the strength you want by the final amount, then divide by 180. For a 3mg liquid in 100ml, that is 3 times 100, which is 300, divided by 180. The answer is 1.7 shots.

You cannot add 0.7 of a bottle, so you round up. Most people choose 2 shots, and that is why a 100ml shortfill with two shots is so common. If you rounded down to 1 shot you would end up near 1.6mg, which is a light mix.

These are our own sums, not a rule from the maker. If your shot is a different size or strength, put your own numbers in the same three steps.

A Mixing Chart From 3mg to 18mg

Here the final amount is exactly 100ml. To get there, you pour out some of the shortfill first so the shots and the liquid add up to 100ml. This is how people mix when they want more than 3mg.

Shots added With 18mg shots With 15mg shots
1 1.8mg 1.5mg
2 3.6mg 3mg
3 5.4mg 4.5mg
4 7.2mg 6mg
5 9mg 7.5mg
6 10.8mg 9mg
10 18mg 15mg

Look at the 15mg column. Two shots give exactly 3mg, and four shots give exactly 6mg. If you like round numbers, a 15mg shot such as the NIC UP 15mg 70VG makes the mixing easier to remember.

To read the chart, find the number of shots in the left column. Then look across to the strength of the shot you own. The number you land on is the strength of the finished 100ml. Run your finger down the column until you reach the strength you want.

The bottom row is the limit. Ten shots is a full 100ml of shots and nothing else. You get the strength of the shot itself, no more.

How Many Nic Shots for 100ml to Make 6mg

To make 6mg in a 100ml mix with 18mg shots, you need 3.3 shots. That is awkward, so most people pick one of two choices.

  • 3 shots: 5.4mg, a little under.
  • 4 shots: 7.2mg, a little over.

If you want a near-perfect 6mg from a full 100ml shortfill, there is another way. Pour 20ml out of the bottle, so 80ml of liquid is left. Then add 4 shots of 18mg. The bottle is full again at 120ml, and the sum comes out at 6mg: 720mg of nicotine across 120ml.

The other option is a shot with a different strength. A 15mg shot gives exactly 6mg with 4 shots in 100ml, as the chart showed. If you would rather stay with 18mg, a shot like NIC UP 18mg 50VG keeps the base close to an even 50/50 mix.

Two mistakes come up again and again with 6mg. The first is counting the shots but forgetting the bottle size, so the bottle ends up too full to close. The second is forgetting that 100ml of liquid already fills most of the bottle. Pour first, add the shots second, and check the level before you screw the cap on.

Pick the number that matches what you already use. You can always add another shot next time, but you cannot take one out.

How Many Nic Shots for 100ml to Make 20mg

You cannot make a 20mg liquid from 18mg shots. Even ten shots, a bottle of pure shots, only reaches 18mg.

A 20mg shot does better, but not by much. With ten 20mg shots in 100ml, you would be pouring nothing but shots. There would be no flavour liquid left. That defeats the point of a shortfill.

In a normal 120ml shortfill bottle, the most you can add is 2 shots. Two 20mg nic salt shots give 400mg across 120ml, which is about 3.3mg.

So if you want a strong liquid, shots are the wrong tool. A ready-made liquid made at that strength is the simpler choice. If you are still learning what salts are, our page on what nic salts are explains it from the start.

When Your Shortfill Is 50ml or 60ml, Not 100ml

Not every bottle is 100ml. A 50ml shortfill usually comes in a 60ml bottle. That leaves room for 1 shot, and one 18mg shot in 60ml gives 3mg.

The sum is 180mg divided by 60ml. The answer is the same 3mg you get from two shots in a 100ml bottle. That is no accident. It looks like the bottle sizes are set so that each 10ml of shot space lands at 3mg. That is our reading, not a maker claim.

Bottle Liquid inside Shots to add Strength with 18mg
60ml 50ml 1 3mg
120ml 100ml 2 3mg

For an example, a Fizzy 50ml bottle follows the 50ml rule. One shot, shake it, and it is ready. Check the label of your own bottle for the true size.

50/50 or 70/30: Does the Shot Change Your Liquid?

A little, yes. Nic shots come in different mixes of VG and PG. The shot goes in with the liquid, so it nudges the final mix.

Here is an easy example. Start with 100ml of 50VG liquid, so 50ml is VG. Add two shots, 20ml in all, to reach 120ml.

Shot type VG in the final bottle
50VG shots 50%
70VG shots About 53%
100VG shots About 58%

These are our own sums. They are small changes, and most kits will not notice a few points. But if your kit likes a thin liquid, a 50VG shot keeps things closest to the bottle. A shot like the 18mg 70VG shots sits in the middle.

If you like a thicker mix, a 100VG nic shot pushes the bottle that way. General vaping advice is that thicker liquid suits bigger coils and thinner liquid suits smaller ones. That is industry talk, not a rule, so check your kit's guide.

How Many Nic Shots for 100ml Bulk, Planning a Box of 25

When you buy a lot of bottles, the maths stops being about one bottle and starts being about stock. The easy way is to count in bottles, not in single shots.

A Box of 25 shots goes a long way. Here is what it covers at 3mg:

  • 12 bottles of 100ml shortfill, using 2 shots each. That uses 24 shots and leaves 1 spare.
  • 25 bottles of 50ml shortfill, using 1 shot each.

For 6mg bottles made the 120ml way (80ml of liquid plus 4 shots), a Box of 25 covers 6 bottles with 1 spare.

If you ask how many nic shots for 100ml bulk buys need, the answer is the same 2 per bottle. Bulk only changes how many boxes you keep on the shelf. Count your bottles, multiply by 2, then round up to the next box. This is also the quickest way to see how many bottles a Box of 25 will cover: 12, with one shot left over.

It helps to write the date and the strength on each finished bottle with a marker. When you mix a dozen bottles in one go, it is easy to forget which batch was which.

Boxes of 25, 50 and 120 all appear in our nicotine shot range. Which one suits you depends on how fast you use them. We do not quote prices here, so ask us about stock and what is in each box.

How Many Nic Shots for 100ml Wholesale Orders Need

People often ask how many nic shots for 100ml wholesale orders need, as if bigger orders follow a different rule. They do not. The sum does not change when the order gets bigger. Two 18mg shots per 100ml bottle is still two shots. What changes is how much planning you do before you order.

Here is a simple way to plan:

  1. Decide on one strength. For most buyers this is 3mg, the 2-shot mix.
  2. Count the shortfill bottles you plan to use over the next few weeks.
  3. Multiply by 2 for 100ml bottles, or by 1 for 50ml bottles.
  4. Add a few spare shots. A cracked cap or a spill happens.
  5. Round up to full boxes.

If you use more than one strength, keep them apart. A shelf of mixed 15mg and 18mg shots is easy to muddle. The NIC UP 15mg 100VG box looks much like the 18mg box on the shelf, so label or separate them.

When you buy wholesale nic shots in larger amounts, match the VG number too. Buying 50VG shots for one bottle and 100VG for another will change the feel of the liquid, as we saw above.

Keep your shots somewhere cool and out of the light, and use the oldest box first. The label on each box is the best guide to how long a shot keeps, so read it when the box arrives.

Handling Nicotine Shots Safely

Nicotine liquid needs care. These are good habits, in plain words:

  1. Keep shots away from children and pets at all times.
  2. Read the label for the size and strength before you start.
  3. Open the shortfill and squeeze or pour the shot in slowly.
  4. Put the cap back on tight and shake the bottle well.
  5. Leave the bottle to rest for a while. Many vapers wait a day or two, but that is common advice rather than a rule.
  6. Wipe up any spill straight away and wash your hands.

It also helps to know the UK limits for products on sale. GOV.UK sets out the UK e-liquid limits: nicotine strength of no more than 20mg/ml, and a nicotine refill container of no more than 10ml. The page was last updated on 16 August 2024. A 10ml shot sits inside that refill limit, which is our own reading of the rule.

This guide is not legal advice, and the GOV.UK page covers products for sale, not what you do at home. Nicotine products are for adults only. If you want to read about who can buy them, see the legal age to buy guide.

Questions Buyers Ask

How many nic shots for 100ml of shortfill?

Add 2 shots of 18mg to a 100ml shortfill in a 120ml bottle. That gives 3mg. One shot gives about 1.6mg.

How many nic shots for 100ml does a Box of 25 cover?

A Box of 25 covers 12 bottles of 100ml shortfill at 2 shots each, with 1 shot spare. It covers 25 bottles of 50ml shortfill at 1 shot each.

Can I add 3 shots to a 100ml shortfill?

Not in the usual 120ml bottle, because it only has room for 2 shots. To use 3 or 4 shots, pour some liquid out first so the total stays at the bottle size.

How many nic shots for 100ml bulk orders?

The same as for one bottle, which is 2 per 100ml. The count stays at 2, however many bottles you mix. Bulk only changes how many boxes you need. Multiply your bottles by 2, then round up to full boxes.

What shot should I pick for wholesale orders?

The count of how many nic shots for 100ml wholesale buyers need is still 2 per bottle. Pick the strength you use most, then match the VG number across all your orders. For 3mg in a 100ml shortfill, two 18mg shots do the job. Ask us if you want help choosing.

Can I make a 20mg liquid with nic shots?

No, not from a shortfill bottle. 18mg shots top out at 18mg, and a 120ml bottle only holds 2 shots anyway. A ready-made liquid at the strength you want is the easier way.

Is the nicotine strength on the shot always 18mg?

No. Our range includes 15mg, 18mg and 20mg salt shots. Always read the label and use the sum in section two if the number is different.
